ADA Title II Digital Accessibility: Is Your Agency Ready?
Practical digital accessibility for public agencies and the firms that serve them.
Effective April 20, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice's Interim Final Rule extends the ADA Title II digital accessibility compliance deadlines by one year. State and local entities serving populations of 50,000 or more now have until April 26, 2027 to meet WCAG 2.1 AA for websites and mobile applications. Smaller entities and special districts have until April 26, 2028. That's time to build real capability, not permission to wait. AOG helps public agencies and the AEC firms that serve them use the extension strategically, with a consultant who has worked inside your world.
The Compliance Gap
The Mandate is Clear. The Path to Compliance is Not.
The DOJ’s 2024 final rule requires all state and local government digital content to be accessible. But for most public agencies — and the AEC consulting firms producing deliverables on their behalf — the path from ‘we know we have a problem’ to ‘we can demonstrate compliance’ is anything but clear.
The risks are real and compounding:
- DOJ investigations and civil rights complaints
- FHWA and FTA federal funding conditions tied to accessibility
- Inaccessible public involvement portals and environmental document libraries that put federally mandated participation processes at legal risk
- Non-conformant PDF deliverables submitted to DOT clients by AEC firms — creating liability for both parties
“An inaccessible online public meeting portal isn’t just a WCAG violation — it’s evidence of ADA non-compliance in a federally mandated process.”
~Dr. Becky Rehorn, Founder, AOG
